When talking about the shadow self, I mean the least attractive, most shameful parts of your personality that you would never want anyone else to see because it makes you feel vulnerable and exposed. Shadow work is a process in which you do intense self-analysis on your darker qualities.īy doing shadow work, you can confront the shadow side of yourself that often comes out in unhealthy ways, such as experiencing mood swings or being hypersensitive to criticism.ĭoing shadow work does not mean that you have to become more like someone else it’s simply about exploring who you really are and bringing your true self into fruition. ![]() It’s like taking a deeper look at yourself, peeling away the layers and dealing with whatever you find underneath. Shadow work is the process of exploring the unconscious parts of your mind with the goal of bringing them into conscious awareness so that you can accept and integrate them with your personality. It all comes down to self-knowledge and self-awareness.īeing aware of your shadow self means you make better choices in life and identify the issues that you want to change or work on. As a result, you may find that you hold the solution to any problem that comes your way.So, why is it beneficial to work on shadow elements of yourself? Get the confusion out of your mind and down on a blank piece of paper. Rumination takes up space and energy in your mind when you could be using it for more productive things. Writing your thoughts down on paper may offer you a sense of relief. Once the time has passed, you may find that you have more to say than you realize. Set yourself a timer for 2 minutes and write down whatever comes to mind. Jot down all the clutter floating around your mind and allow yourself to write about the issues that may be draining your energy. Writing without an agenda can also be beneficial as it can help you process your situation. Some days, you may want to skip over the prompts altogether and free write. Schedule time on your calendar and hold yourself accountable. While we may try to convince ourselves that there is no extra time in the day to write, I believe we can always find a way to make room for the things that are most important to us. ![]() Instead, replace it with 5-10 minutes of writing. Many of us spend more time than we realize scrolling through social media.
